Xerox Phaser 4620DN Review
Xerox Phaser 4600 and 4620 range comprises mono A4 laser printers aimed at large and busy workgroups, where there's a demand for a robust printing workhorse with low running costs and minimal maintenance. All models have a gigabit Ethernet port and can handle a maximum monthly workload of up to 275,000 prints, with those designated 4600 able to print up to 52 pages per minute (ppm) and the 4620 models reaching 62ppm. Xerox's driver installer is one of the more user-friendly we've encountered on this class of printer.
As standard, the range has a 550-sheet enclosed paper tray with a 100-sheet multi-purpose feed and a 500-sheet output, while all but the entry-level 4600V/N have the duplex. The 4600V/DT and 4260V/DT variants include a second 550-sheet tray and all models can be upgraded to a maximum total of five such trays. There are many other upgrades available, highlights of which include a 2,000-sheet high-capacity feeder and a 500-sheet finisher with 50-sheet stapling. If you do buy the 4600V/N, a reasonably-priced upgrade to duplex is subsequently available. We reviewed the 4620V/DN which, like other Phasers, is built from cream and blue plastics. Though sizable, it's not unattractive. While not exactly whisper-quiet, the clunks you'd expect from a fast laser seem well cushioned, making them less intrusive for anyone working nearby. The physical installation is fairly easy, involving just the insertion of the supplied photoconductor, toner, and waste toner bottle. While it's just possible for a single worker to unbox and lift the printer, it's wise to follow Xerox's recommendation that this part of the set up is a two-man job.
Once switched on and loaded with paper, the Phaser prints a configuration report summarising the installed components, network settings, and tray status. Xerox's driver installer is one of the more user-friendly we've encountered on this class of printer, simply detecting it over the network and prompting to install the preferred PCL6 driver by default.
It's immediately obvious that this is a rapid printer. In our text document test, the first page printed in just 11 seconds including the time taken to spool and transmit the job over the network. After resting for an hour, the same test from cold took 32 seconds. From warm the full 25-page job completed in just 34 seconds; a rate of 44ppm including the preparation time. Printed at default quality our 24-page mixed graphics test was slightly slower, with the printer pausing momentarily to process some complex pages before finishing the job at an impressive 33ppm. Switching to the highest print quality, two 10x8" photos took 15 seconds to print on two A4 pages.
Typically, the extra paper transportation involved in duplex printing meant that the 4620V/DN printed duplex sides at around half the rate of simplex sides, with a 10-side, five-page graphical job completing in 35 seconds. Print quality was very high across all tests, with crisp text and progressive, smooth shading in graphics and photographs. Banding was virtually absent, and the toner's semi-matte finish was consistent and professional.
The Xerox Phaser 4620DN supports walk-up USB printing, and its large mono LCD and simple menu system make this more simple than many. Along with the high-capacity consumables, this should help minimise print-related helpdesk tickets. Future-proofing comes through support for a massive range of protocols and standards including IPv6. Useful secure printing features include the ability to log all print jobs for auditing purposes and allow only certain IP addresses to print. There's also Image Overwrite, which can be used to destroy sensitive information on the optional hard disk, should you choose to fit one.
Xerox Phaser 4620DN supplies the printer with a reasonable 10,000-page starter toner, along with a photoconductor drum rated at 60,000 pages. Consumables contracts are available, but otherwise, replacement drums last 80,000 pages and cost around £115 (excluding VAT), while toner is available in 13,000-page (£134) and 30,000-page (£175) packs. The only other consumable is a £90 fuser kit due at around 150,000 pages, giving the range a per-page cost of 0.79p (0.94p inc VAT). This is higher than ideal for a printer likely to deliver moderately high volumes, but we should stress that the range's consumables are new products too and that consumable prices tend to fall as they become more widely available.
